Start your day at United By Blue, a one-of-a-kind boutique and coffee shop at 3421 Walnut Street. Born in Philly, they offer “responsible durable goods,” meaning you can pick up a t-shirt, backpack, or pair of sunnies knowing you are supporting a good cause. In fact, United By Blue removes one pound of trash from our world's oceans and waterways for every product sold. And that’s something we can get behind. After you’re done browsing, grab a pour-over at the coffee counter and add some spring to your step.

Make a right on Walnut and then another right on 36th Street. To your left, just before Sansom, you’ll find Urban Outfitters, the national (and international) retailer that got its start right here in West Philly. UO has something for everyone—trendy men’s and women’s fashions, basics, shoes, accessories, and home goods—not to mention a killer sales section. All Urban Outfitters stores are a little bit different, so take your time and browse the seemingly endless racks on both levels.

Take 36th back down to Walnut, make a right, and settle in for a leisurely stroll. In about a half mile, make a left on 40th Street. As you walk toward Locust, you’ll find The Last Word Bookshop, one of Philly’s best used bookstores. Browse the aisles for your favorite titles and don’t forget to look out for Lester, a former stray cat who now keeps customers entertained by climbing the bookshelves. No matter what you like to read, The Last Word has something for everyone.

You’ve undoubtedly worked up an appetite from all that shopping! Luckily The Greek Lady is right next door. If the weather is right, sit outside and order the Greek Lady Sampler—you’ll get tzatziki, melitzanosalata, taramosalata, feta dip, hummus, and stuffed grape leaves. Or try the classics and split a gyro, chicken souvlaki sandwich, and a Greek salad (of course). Opa!

Did you save room for dessert? Ben & Jerry’s is just a few stores down, on the other side of The Last Word Bookshop. Grab a scoop (or two) to go from the Vermont favorite and head down 40th. Take a left onto Locust Walk, one of the prettiest pedestrian walkways in the city, and continue another half mile from Hamilton Village to Shoemaker Green, taking a minute to rest in the heart of Penn’s campus at the iconic Split Button sculpture. Once you reach Shoemaker Green, you’ll see the “The Cathedral of College Basketball,” The Palestra, on your left and Penn’s stadium, Franklin Field, on your right. Hop on Smith Walk and take it across Paley Bridge until you reach Penn Park.

One of the city’s best public spaces, Penn Park is 24 acres of athletic fields and walkways located to the east of Penn's academic campus. Wander the grounds and you might catch a game of baseball or people coming to and from tennis matches. Grab a seat under one of the many canopied trees and get started on one of the books you picked up today. Or just sit back, relax, and watch the world go by—you’ve earned it!
