Sunday Brunch in U. City

Picture this: it’s a gorgeous Sunday morning and the only thing on your calendar is brunch with friends.
Instead of meeting at your usual Center City (or Old City or Fishtown or South Philly) spot, gather the crew and head into University City. You’d be surprised what you can find just west of Center City when it comes to shopping, dining, and so much more!

If you live in Center City, you’ve probably been to Spread Bagelry on 20th Street. Founded right here in Philly, their hearty Montreal-style bagels (and homemade spreads) are to die for. But did you know they opened another, much bigger location in University City? Head over to 3602 Chestnut and settle in for a leisurely brunch just off Penn’s campus. The U. City Spread offers a few things the Rittenhouse outpost does not (think bagel burgers, bagel dogs, and a full bar) and is a great place to sit back, relax, and catch up with friends.

If you’re looking for something sweet after brunch, turn left out of Spread and walk a few steps to Kiwi Frozen Yogurt. Family-owned and operated, Kiwi offers delicious fro yo flavors like birthday cake, homemade cinnamon graham, salted caramel pretzel, and many more. Oh, and don’t get us started on the toppings you can add to make your treat even sweeter. Kiwi has locations in PA and NJ, but this one is their only shop in Philadelphia.

Located right around the corner from Kiwi is the ICA—the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Founded in 1963, it has developed an international reputation as a preeminent venue for contemporary art and culture. Exhibitions change frequently and feature local and international artists of all kinds. The ICA is open from 12-6pm on Sundays and—get this—admission is always free.

After all that good food (and art!), it’s time to stretch your legs. Take a right out of ICA on 36th Street and then another right to hop on Locust Walk. Take a minute to observe the beauty of Penn’s campus as you stroll to 39th Street—and then make your way to Spruce. At 3920 Spruce, you’ll find a charming old Victorian home that’s been transformed into one of the best new and used bookstores in the city. House of Our Own is a book-lover’s paradise, with a great selection of fiction, non-fiction, and scholarly works. And what’s better than perusing the shelves with fellow bibliophiles in a gorgeous old house? Not much in our book.

Next up: time for a little pampering. Take Spruce Street back to 38th and make your way to Walnut Street. There’s a lot to see on this main campus drag, but we suggest popping into Bluemercury at 3603 Walnut. The unique beauty retailer offers high-end brands like Kiehl’s, La Mer, NARS, and Bumble & Bumble and has a spa on-site. Bluemercury’s staff are experts on everything from skincare to nails to hair care and always deliver personal attention (often with free samples). We call that a win-win.

Once you’ve picked up a few things to make you look and feel more beautiful inside and out, keep heading down Walnut towards 34th Street. At 172 South 34th you’ll find Piper Boutique, one of Philly’s best kept secrets when it comes to women’s apparel and accessories. Piper has the latest trends—as well as standby classics—and their staff act as personal stylists to help you find just the right look for any occasion. After you’re done shopping, you can hop back on Walnut and take the Walnut Street Bridge to walk back to Center City—all while planning your next visit to University City, of course.
